Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly. This condition is common in males at various stages of life, including infancy, puberty, and older age. The primary cause is an imbalance between the hormones estrogen and testosterone.

It's important for individuals experiencing symptoms of gynecomastia to consult with a healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. In cases where gynecomastia is persistent and causes significant discomfort or emotional distress, consultation with a plastic surgeon may be advised.
1
Causes
It can be caused by natural hormonal changes, particularly during puberty. Other factors may include the use of certain medications, use of anabolic steroids, obesity, chronic liver disease, kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, and tumors that affect hormonal balance.
2
Symptoms
Gynecomastia presents as a lump of fatty tissue under the nipple which may feel tender. This should not be confused with the extra fat tissue typically seen in overweight or obese males, which is known as pseudogynecomastia.
3
Diagnosis
A physical examination and medical history are typically used for diagnosis. In some cases, blood tests or imaging tests like mammograms or ultrasounds might be needed to rule out other conditions.
4
Treatment
In many cases, especially in teenagers, gynecomastia resolves on its own without treatment. If caused by an underlying condition like hypogonadism, malnutrition, or cirrhosis, treating the underlying condition may resolve gynecomastia. If the enlargement is significant or causing discomfort, treatment options may include medication or surgery (such as liposuction or mastectomy).
5
Psychological Impact
It can cause embarrassment and distress, and may affect self-confidence and body image.
